As part of its Virtual Think Tank series focusing on supporting the success of underserved students, this session will solicit dialogue and feedback on a pilot self-assessment instrument designed to assist members of the higher education community in gauging the progress of their campus diversity, inclusion, and equity efforts.
Gabbard and Ramos will share the history, context, and content of a self-assessment rubric developed by a working group, prompted by conversations at NERCHE’s Multicultural Affairs Think Tank and modeled on Furco’s Self-Assessment Rubric for the Institutionalization of Service Learning in Higher Education. They will discuss how the rubric may be important to the field and how feedback during its pilot will be helpful. This is intended to be a highly participatory session. As a result of their participation in the session, audience members will leave with a set of potential strategies to use on their own campuses for beginning and/or supplementing existing diversity change efforts. This session should particularly benefit participants interested in emerging forms of institutional participatory assessment related to the concept of inclusive excellence.

About the Presenters:
Glenn Gabbard comes to NERCHE as an academic leader, administrator, faculty member, and researcher with experience in community colleges, universities, and non-profit organizations. Throughout his work as a faculty member, department chair, dean, and director of national change initiatives, Glenn has focused on issues related to forging stronger collaborative efforts within and across institutions that acknowledge the contributions of individuals who are labeled “underserved.”
Raquel Ramos has spent her career in higher education working with under-represented students. She is an academic dean and director of the Marshall Center for Intercultural Learning at Wheaton College. She provides leadership for campus diversity initiatives as well as developing co-curricular resources and support for academic, cultural, and social programs fostering awareness and appreciation of diversity at Wheaton.
